T-Minus 19 Weeks: Us – 2, Dryer – 0

Our 6 year old dryer is clearly trying to tell us something. We are refusing to hear it.

Remember a few weeks ago when it just decided not to turn on? That was a burned out plug due to a metric ton a dryer lint buildup. We cleaned her up and brought her back to life.

This wasn’t even half of the lint buildup

Yesterday, she decided to be a little more sneaky. She turned on just fine but refused to heat up.

We had two options, replace or repair.

Planned obsolescence

Most things are not designed to be repaired, they are only meant to be replaced.

We have two refrigerators in our house. The one in the kitchen, that holds all of our food, has been replaced three times in the 17 years we have lived here.

Notice the preview of the new cabinet color!

The one in the laundry room, that holds overflow beverages, was purchased in 1983 and is still going strong. In fact, the ice maker on the “main” fridge died so the “old” fridge now supplies all of our ice.

Not today, dryer

We’re in the middle of a kitchen renovation, we just finished a bathroom renovation, and we have a vacation coming up in 5 weeks. The last thing we wanted to do was spend hundreds of dollars on a new dryer.

Luckily, we have YouTube and Amazon! At 11:30 last night Gene was watching videos on how to replace a heating element in our model of dryer. By 7:30 this morning Amazon had delivered a new heating element, and by 8:30 this morning we had a functioning dryer!

The second time this dryer has been disassembled in the last four weeks

Modern technology may be making things that break down more quickly, but it also gives us easy access to learn how to fix things when they break down.

We don’t know how much longer we can limp along with this dryer, but we’re going to keep it going as long as we can!
