Today we are leaning in hard on the future where we live in other people’s houses and leave the maintenance to them.
The appliance business is a racket
This morning Steph transferred the laundry from the washer to the dryer and hit the power button on the dryer.
Nothing happened.
Long story short, the plug basically melted. How did the plug melt? It might have had something to do with the metric ton of lint we pulled out of the dryer:

Now to get to that metric ton of lint we had to take the dryer apart. Completely apart – in a way that probably voided any manufacturer’s warranty (although this dryer is almost 10 years old, so that warranty is long expired anyway). Why don’t manufacturers make it easy to clean and repair their appliances? Planned obsolescence. Good for business, not so great for consumers trying to eke every bit of life out of our appliances.

In the end, it took us most of Saturday, but the dryer is fixed (and we avoided buying a new one!). Yay us!
Questionable design decisions
This week, we also FINALLY addressed something that has bothered us since we moved into the house. The air return vents in the living room.

There are three air return vents along the main wall in the house. They are large and white and have always been an unwanted focal point in our living room. This week we painted them the same gray as the walls. While they are still large, ugly, and noticeable, they are now less noticeable. We can live with that.

On the horizon
This weekend we will be hosting our last ever Christmas party in the house. The very next day, demolition starts on the kitchen! We are so excited about this renovation and will share pictures with you as we go along.
