We’re under 40 weeks left! Aaaah!
“Adult children”
A few weeks ago, the kid turned eighteen. We are officially the parents of adult children (“adult children,” what an oxymoron!). We knew this was coming, of course. We can do basic math. But it is a weird feeling nonetheless. Even knowing that we couldn’t start traveling until they all have flown the nest, it still hit us a little harder than we expected it to.

Birthday/Graduation gift
We decided a while ago that our 18th birthday/high school graduation gift to the kid would be a custom bass guitar. Gene got a custom bass a few years ago and it was a game changer. So last week we loaded into the car (on Gene’s birthday) and drive to Topeka to visit Corwin Guitars, the same place that built Gene’s bass. Danny Corwin listened to everything the kid wanted in a new bass and took copious notes. Everything will be custom: color, body shape, wood, neck measurements, hardware, electronics…everything. It will take 10-12 months to build, so it should be done the summer before college. Perfect timing!

The last first day of school
It was a hard last: the last first day of school. I did get a “last first day of school” picture, but I had to get up pretty early in the morning to get it. The school does something called Senior Sunrise where all of the seniors gather on the football field for sunrise on the first day of school, so the kid was out the door at 5:45 a.m.!
Tonight was “back to school” night where Jayrock played a mini concert in front of a group of students, teachers, and parents. Last week, before the school year started, Jayrock played a few songs at convocation in front of every teacher and employee in the school district!

Overall, the kid’s future plans are starting to come together. College will likely be a combination of training for real world skills (audio engineering) followed by some creative exploration (music composition). As the plans start to take shape, we’re all feeling pretty calm about the process and the kid’s future.
