T-Minus 44 and43 Weeks: We got rained out, and then rained out again, and then again

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind! We have been busy showing our Spanish visitor around and have been having a great time!

A quick update on the Monopoly game from last Tuesday night that we referenced in the last blog post. Apparently, the Spanish visitor is, indeed, a Monopoly master and she beat us all mercilessly. By the end of the game, the bank ran out of $500 bills. She had them all!

The beginning of the end. All of us landed on her property!

Concerts, one wet, one dry

Two weeks ago, the kid spent the week learning jazz theory at the American Jazz Museum and that culminated in an end of the week concert where the kids got to show off what they learned. She had some great jazz bass instructors there and will likely continue with their fall cohort starting in September.

The kid is in there…somewhere

The same week, we went to Starlight to see Collective Soul and Live in concert. As we were sitting waiting for the main acts to start (we had already seen two opening acts), a dark cloud started slowly rolling in. Then we saw people starting to make their way to the covered parts of the amphitheater.

The start of the night…such a nice blue sky!

Then we saw the sound guys covering the equipment with tarps. That’s when we started thinking we might not actually see this show. Not long after, the sky opened up. Rain, thunder, lightning, the whole works. We all huddled under cover and waited. And waited. Finally, they cancelled the show. It’s rescheduled for mid-August but the jury it still out on whether we will go or not.

Exactly one hour later…

We got wet…intentionally

The next time we got wet was on purpose! We took our Spanish visitor to the Lake of the Ozarks for a weekend of boat rides, jet skis, paddleboarding and jumping off the high dive. It turns out our Spanish visitor really loves the water and is completely fearless! Steph went out tubing with her and she kept saying, “faster!”

She survived tubing!
And she got to drive the Jet Ski!

The weekend of plans that weren’t

This weekend, as I write this, most of our plans have been rained out.

Steph’s dad came in town from Texas and was rewarded with the same hot, steamy weather he left behind! Usually he gets a bit of a break from the extreme heat, but not this weekend! But in the end, it wasn’t the heat that foiled our plans, it was the rain. Again.

We had tickets to the Royals game on Friday night and it was rain delayed…and then postponed to Saturday afternoon (we couldn’t go).

Saturday night was a big night. Cherry Bomb was playing a gig at Paul and Jack’s in North Kansas City, and JayRock, the kid’s band, was opening for them. The evening was sunny and hot, really hot. The kids did great in spite of the extreme heat.

After JayRock, Cherry Bomb took the stage and did a great first set, as usual. Then, without warning, the sky opened up. Literally. We felt two or three raindrops and then two seconds later everything was drenched. We all got caught in the downpour and came home soaking wet and cold. But at least it cooled things down a bit!

Just a little dancing in the rain!

Sunday was another extreme heat day, so we played indoor mini golf at Prehistoric Putt. It was really fun! I don’t recommend it for hard core competitive mini golfers, but for those who like to have fun (and maybe not keep score), it was great!

Next week will be much cooler here, which will be very welcome! Our plans include exploring downtown Kansas City, a day trip to Worlds of Fun for our Spanish visitor (with a friend), and a pool party!
