T-Minus 46 Weeks: Renovations, fireworks, and fireflies

Happy July! We hope you all had a happy and safe Independence Day and that your animals survived the warzone that was your neighborhood this weekend!

On deck – bathroom remodel

We’ve been preparing for our bathroom remodel, which will start next week. We are going to handle most of the painting before we have the floor replaced. Everything is so much easier when you don’t have to worry about getting paint on the floor! Unfortunately, the project includes painting the ceiling. I’m convinced that when people go to hell, they have to paint ceilings for the rest of eternity.

One of the items on our bathroom remodel list is a bathroom vanity glow up. We talked through the options and decided to paint the existing vanity rather than replace it outright. After several paint samples, we’ve picked a paint color we think we will like. We’ll be sure to share before and after pictures when it is done!

We ordered two of these concrete vessel sinks – they arrive this week. Even odds on whether we keep them or return them and buy something more practical

But first, basement floor replacement

Tomorrow, the basement floor will be removed and over the next few days, new flooring will be installed. We have hired this work out because, like ceiling painting, it is miserable work meant for the young.

But replacing the basement floor meant that I had another chance to paint something without worrying about spilling paint on the floor! Whee! I couldn’t pass up an opportunity like that!

Our basement has a kitchenette, and the bottom cabinets have always been a slightly different stain color than the upper cabinets and it has always bothered me. So I painted them!

Here they are before:

See the color difference?

And here they are with the first paint sample that I thought I loved until I saw it on the cabinets. Nope!

This was much bluer than we thought it would be

And here is the final result. We ended up going with a dark gray.

Much better!

If the paint color looks familiar to you (i.e. you are a superfan of Week Bye Week), you are correct! It is the same color we painted the front door a few months ago.

Lighting is so interesting. This color looks totally different here than on the basement cabinets. But it is the same color!

We had a little fun this weekend, too

It wasn’t all work this weekend. We took our Spanish visitor to a baseball game on the 4th of July to see some fireworks. And many of our neighbors (and the city) put on fireworks shows on July 3rd as well, so she got her fill of American fireworks shows.

We had GREAT seats!

Another interesting thing we learned this week – fireflies are super rare in Spain! On July 3rd we were outside at dusk and the fireflies started glowing. We didn’t think anything of it, but our Spanish visitor’s face lit up! We have spent the last few evenings outside at dusk chasing fireflies and putting them in a jar.

There are about 7 fireflies in here. We let them go soon after, we promise.

Next week we will share some before and after pictures of our basement floor replacement. And we’re taking our Spanish visitor on some more adventures around town!
