T-Minus 49 Weeks: Things we’ll miss plus another room makeover

We’ve put down roots…literally

This house is not our favorite house we’ve owned. Our previous houses were all old construction with great details like intricate woodwork, beautiful pocket doors, and attractive yet useful transom windows. We chose this house because the layout and location worked for our family at the time.

This is, however, the house we’ve lived in the longest, by far. From 1991 to 2008 (the first 17 years of our marriage), we lived in two apartments and three houses. From 2009 to 2025 (the second 17 years of our marriage), we’ve lived here. As of now, we have lived in this house for as long as we lived everywhere else (as a married couple) combined. Most of our kids remember no other home than this one.

So, while this is not our favorite house, we have made it our own and will miss those things that we will definitely miss when we pass the keys to the new owner. In this last spring/summer season, we are taking more time to enjoy the plants and flowers that we have planted over the years, and which have taken on a life of their own.

Our favorite hosta. And that bird house has birthed dozens of baby birds over the years.
It was an afterthought to plant these hostas, but they came back this year with a vengeance!
Deceptively easy to grow and maintain, but so pretty!

If there is a next house, we won’t be there long enough to put down these kinds of roots, and our Airbnbs may or may not have nice landscaping (it isn’t high on our lodging requirements). So, we’re going to enjoy these flowers while we can!

Another room painted

Over this past weekend, I painted the office. It was a marathon day of painting that included painting the ceiling. I really, really hate painting ceilings. It is one of the few ceilings we will need to paint in the house and I’m glad it is done, but painting over your head is miserable work.

Before. Goodbye accent wall…

In the rest of the rooms we’ve painted, we made a conscious decision not to re-hang anything on the walls to avoid having to patch and paint the holes when we move. In the office, we decided to re-hang my diplomas after painting because they are hanging on hooks that use two small nails, which will be very easy to patch and paint later.

We moved the desk so Steph can look out the window at work
Painted closet! A nice little detail for the next owners

Painting near carpet

I mentioned the other week about painting baseboards in a carpeted room, but I hadn’t gotten any good picture of the taping process. When I painted to office, I remembered to take some picture of the taped carpet, so here you go!

You just pull back the carpet fibers and tape between them and the baseboard. Easy peasy!

Next week we will be doing some spring cleaning before we start 6 weeks of hosting guests! It’s going to be a fun summer!
